Schiller grasses ( Koeleria ) are a genus of plants within the sweet grass family (Poaceae). The up to 45 species are distributed in mainly the temperate areas almost worldwide. They are placed in the tribe of the Poeae.
description
Vegetative characteristics
Koeleria species are herbaceous plants with one or more perennials . They are mainly characterized by velvety hairs ( trichomes ). The simple leaves are flat.
Generative characteristics
The inflorescences are more or less dense panicles .
Systematics and distribution
The genus Koeleria was established in 1805 by Christian Hendrik Persoon . The generic name Koeleria honors the German botanist Georg Ludwig Koeler (1765–1807). Synonyms for Koeleria Pers. are: Achaeta E. Fourn . , Airochloa Link , Brachystylus Dulac , Collinaria Ehrh. , Leptophyllochloa Calderón ex Nicora .
The wide distribution area stretches from Europe via northwest to South Africa and from southwest Asia via Siberia to Central and East Asia and the New World .
The genus Koeleria includes 35 to 45 species:
- Koeleria altaica (Domin) Krylov : It is distributed from Siberia to Kazakhstan and China.
- Koeleria argentea Griseb. (Syn .: Koeleria litvinowii Domin ): Central Asia to Afghanistan and China.
- Koeleria asiatica Domin : It iswidespreadin the Holarctic from Eastern Europe to Russia's Far East as well as Tibet and subarctic North America.
- Koeleria askoldensis Roshev. : It occurs in Russia's Far East.
- Koeleria betteri Ujhelyi : It occurs in eastern Central Europe and Eastern Europe .
- Koeleria biebersteinii M.G. Kalen. : This endemic occurs only in the Crimea .
- Koeleria boliviensis (Domin) AMMolina : It occurs only in Bolivia .
- Shiny Schillergrass ( Koeleria brevis Steven , Syn .: Koeleria lobata (M.Bieb.) Roem. & Schult. , Koeleria splendens C.Presl ): It occurs from the Ukraine to Turkey and the Caucasus .
- Koeleria calderonii A. Molina : It occurs only in north-western Argentina .
- Koeleria capensis Nees : It occurs in Cameroon and from Ethiopia to southern Africa and on the southwestern Arabian Peninsula.
- Koeleria carolii Emb .: It occurs only in Morocco .
- Koeleria caudata (Link) Steud. : It is common in the western Mediterranean .
- Mont-Cenis-Schillergras ( Koeleria cenisia ) Reut. ex E. Rev. : It occurs in the western Alps in France , Italy and Switzerland .
- Koeleria cheesemanii (Hack.) Petrie : It occurs in New Zealand .
- Koeleria crassipes Lange : It occurs on the Iberian Peninsula.
- Koeleria delavignei Czern. ex Domin : It occurs from Eastern Europe to Siberia.
- Koeleria embergeri Quézel : It only occurs in Morocco.
- Woolly Schillergrass ( Koeleria eriostachya ) Pancic : It occurs in the Eastern Alps (in Italy, Switzerland, Austria ), the Balkan Peninsula , in the Carpathians , Turkey , in the Caucasus and in western Iran .
- Koeleria fueguina Calderon ex Nicora : It occurs from central to southern Chile and in southern Argentina.
- Blue-green Schillergrass ( Koeleria glauca (Spreng.) DC. ): It is distributed from Europe to Central Asia to Mongolia .
- Koeleria gubanovii Tzvelev : It wasfirst describedin 2011 from the Amur region .
- Hairy Schillergras or Raues Schillergras ( Koeleria hirsuta Gaudich. , Syn .: Koeleria wilczekiana Domin ): It occurs in the Alps in Italy, Switzerland and Austria.
- Koeleria × hungarica Domin = Koeleria glauca × Koeleria macrantha : Europe.
- Koeleria inaequaliglumis A. Molina : Northwest Argentina.
- Koeleria insubrica Brullo, Giusso & Miniss. : It was first described in 2009. It occurs from Italy to Croatia .
- Koeleria karavajevii Govor. : Eastern Siberia.
- Koeleria kurtzii Hack. ex Kurtz : From Peru to southern South America.
- Koeleria lucana Brullo, Giusso & Miniss. : It was first described in 2009 from southern Italy.
- Koeleria luerssenii (Domin) Domin : Caucasus.
- Zierliches Schillergras ( Koeleria macrantha (Ledeb.) Schult. , Syn .: Koeleria cristata subsp. Macrantha (Ledeb.) Rothm. , Koeleria gracilis Pers. , Koeleria cristata subsp. Gracilis (Trin.) H. Lindb. , Aira cristata L. , Aira macrantha Ledeb. )
- Koeleria mendocinensis (Hauman) Calderon ex Nicora : Western Argentina.
- Koeleria micrathera (Desv.) Griseb. : It occurs from central and southern Chile to southern Argentina. It used to be found on the Juan Fernández Islands .
- Koeleria × mixta Domin = Koeleria macrantha × Koeleria vallesiana : Western Europe.
- Koeleria nitidula Velen. : Southeast Europe to Afghanistan.
- Koeleria novozelandica Domin : New Zealand.
- Koeleria permollis Steud. : From Peru to the Falkland Islands.
- Koeleria praeandina A.Molina : Northwest Argentina.

- Greater Schillergrass ( Koeleria pyramidata (Lam.) P.Beauv. Subsp. Pyramidata , Syn .: Koeleria pyramidata (Lam.) P.Beauv. , Koeleria grandis Besser ex Nym. , Koeleria heribaudii Ujhelyi ): It is from Europe to Siberia and common in Nepal.
- Koeleria pyramidata subsp. schroeteriana (Domin) Quintanar & Castrov. (Syn .: Koeleria eriostachya subsp. Schroeteriana Domin , Koeleria schroeteriana (Domin) Ujhelyi , Koeleria cristata var. Vestita Gustave & Herib. , Koeleria caudata subvar. Pubiflora Domin , Koeleria eriostachya var. Pyrenaica Domin , Koeleria schroeteriana var. - Koeleria rodriguez-graciae Quintanar & Castrov. : It was first described in 2013/2014 from the northwest Iberian Peninsula.
- Koeleria skrjabinii Karav. & Tzvelev : Eastern Siberia.
- Koeleria splendens C.Presl : Mediterranean area.
- Koeleria thonii Domin : Siberia.
- Koeleria tristis Domin : This endemic occurs only in the western Carpathians .
- Koeleria tzvelevii N.V. Vlassova : It occurs in southeastern Siberia.
- Valais Schillergrass ( Koeleria vallesiana (Honck.) Gaudin ): It occurs in Spain , Portugal , France, Italy, Switzerland, Germany , south-west England and north-west Africa .
- Koeleria ventanicola A.Molina : It comes in northeast Argentina.
- Koeleria vurilochensis Calderon ex Nicora : It occurs in southern Argentina.
