The Maisinger Gorge is a gorge southwest of Starnberg . The Maisinger Bach runs through this gorge .

geology

The gorge is surrounded by Nagelfluh rocks, which are around 2 to 8 meters high . Like the Maisinger See, the gorge is probably a relic from the Ice Age.

Tourist importance

The Maisinger Gorge is particularly important for school classes and hikers thanks to the nearby beer garden at Maisinger See and the town of Maising . The gorge can be reached by bike or on foot wearing normal shoes. The large number of visitors on the sometimes narrow path sometimes leads to conflicts with the mountain bikers. The gorge can be visited both from the Possenhofen S-Bahn station and from Maising. The way is well signposted. Persistent hikers can also plan a variant from Starnberg or to Andechs .

Drinking water protection area

Old waterworks from 1896

The wells for the drinking water supply of the city of Starnberg are located at the foot of the Maisinger Gorge . The drinking water for around 25,000 residents is pumped here from a depth of a few meters , the quality of which is so good that it can be passed on to consumers in its natural state. As early as 1896 a waterworks was put into operation here to supply the surrounding communities.

Protected areas

The Maisinger Canyon lies within the protected landscape Western part of the district of Starnberg (LSG-00542.01), which was found in 2001 under protection. In 2004, the gorge cut into the terminal moraine landscape of Lake Starnberg was recognized as an FFH area under the name Maising training area , which refers to a nearby barracks. The area of the Maxhof training area borders on the Mainsinger Gorge from the south. Before entering the practice area there is a warning by means of appropriate information boards.

The gorge has been designated as a valuable geotope by the Bavarian State Office for the Environment (geotope number: 188R012).
