John Kluge

John Werner Kluge (born September 21, 1914 in Chemnitz , Saxony , † September 7, 2010 in Charlottesville , Virginia ) was a German - American businessman.

Life

As a half-orphan , John Werner Kluge emigrated to Detroit , USA, at the age of eight . During his school days he worked for a Henry Ford company to make a living. After graduating from high school , he received a scholarship and was able to study at Columbia University in New York City . There he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1937, majoring in business.

Since he had accepted American citizenship after entering the USA, he had to go to war for the US Army from 1941 to 1945 during World War II .

In 1946, John Werner Kluge founded the media company Metromedia in New York , which developed well. Within a few years, the company owned its own radio and television stations as well as other media facilities . He ran what was then the largest private broadcasting group in the United States until 1985 and then sold it to Rupert Murdoch .

John Werner Kluge had three children. He last lived in his fourth marriage.

Meaning / appreciation

Smart personal wealth was valued at $ 14 billion in 2006, making him one of the 100 richest people in the world. With part of his fortune he supported the organization Youth for Understanding . He also paid scholarships for poor students, just as he had been.

The Kluge Prize named after him also goes back to a foundation from Kluge . He was also elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2002.
