history

In 1880 Joseph Drouhin took over a wine trading company founded in 1756 in the city of Beaune. After returning from the war, his son Maurice Drouhin took over the business of the trading company. He directed the company's quality policy towards high-quality products and bought vine plots that became vacant, which were sold at very low prices due to the phylloxera disaster and the subsequent fungal diseases ( powdery mildew , downy mildew ). His first purchase was a few acres in the Premier Cru Clos-des-Mouches. More plots followed in the immediate vicinity of Beaune.

It was not until the 1930s, which were difficult in terms of wine industry, that Drouhin acquired a larger plot in the Grand Cru location of Clos de Vougeot. Robert Drouhin was born in 1933. After the early death of his father without an oenological training, he had to take over the family business in 1957. He invested in other Grand Cru locations and from 1968 onwards he established another mainstay in Chablis.

In 1988, Domaine Drouhin Oregon (DDO) was built in the United States for $ 10 million . There, as in Burgundy, they concentrate on wines made from the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grape varieties . The company is managed by Veronique Drouhin-Boss, daughter of Robert.

Fréderic Drouhin has been running the day-to-day business since 2003, while Philippe is responsible for winemaking.

Drouhin owns areas in the Grand Cru vineyards Clos de Bèze (0.12 ha) and Griottes-Chambertin (0.53 ha), Bonnes-Mares (0.23 ha), Le Musigny (0.67 ha), Grand Échezeaux ( 0.47 ha), Échezeaux (0.41 ha), Clos de Vougeot (0.91 ha), Corton (0.29 ha), Corton-Charlemagne (0.34 ha) and Bâtard-Montrachet (0.09 ha ).

Clos des Mouches

Beaune Clos des Mouches Joseph Drouhin is a Premier Cru vineyard that Maurice Drouhin brought into his possession in the 1920s. He bought a total of 41 parcels from 8 different owners. Today Drouhin owns 6.75 hectares in the 25.18 hectare site, which are planted with both Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

The white wine of 1973 was a participant in the legendary Paris wine jury in 1976. The result of this wine tasting , which was humiliating for the French , led, among other things, to the decision to invest in the United States.
