The Maitree-Express , German 'friendship express' ( Hindi : मैत्री एक्सप्रेस Maitree Eksapres , Bengali : মৈত্রী এক্সপ্রেস Maitrī ēksaprēsa ) is an international passenger train that connects Dhaka with Kolkata in West Bengal via the Indian - Bangladeshi border .

history

The cross-border rail traffic from India to East Pakistan , today's Bangladesh, was stopped with the Second Indo-Pakistani War in 1965. Although Bangladesh gained independence from Pakistan in 1971 , India and Bangladesh did not decide to reintroduce this train connection until 2001. There have been delays due to disagreements between the two countries regarding the safety precautions to be taken. Some Indians fear that with the introduction of the train smuggling and illegal immigration will increase. The first train ran on July 8, 2007, although this test drive was not yet public and was only used by government officials. The first public train left Dhaka on April 14, 2008, New Year's Day on the Bengali calendar . On the opening day, a group of Hindu refugees from Bangladesh briefly blocked the train because they were against the new train connection. She was accused by police of placing three bombs on the track.

Train run

The route of the train goes from Kolkata to the northeast. At the border station Gede the train India, the border station relies on the Bangladesh side is Darsana. The entire stay at the border is entered in the timetable as 35 minutes. Shortly before Iswardi, the train crosses the Padma on the Hardinge Bridge . Approximately 90 km further on, the train uses the Bangabandhu Bridge to cross the Jamuna . The route now heads southeast to Dhaka, where the train's terminus is. The train covers the whole distance in a good eight hours. The maximum speed is 90 km / h. There are four departures in each direction during the week.
