Mayakovskaya ( Russian Маяковская ( pronunciation ? / I )) is a 1938 built subway station of the Moscow Metro on the Samoskvorezkaya Line (also "Line 2" or "Green Line"). Audio file / audio sample

It is located in the center of Moscow directly under Tverskaya Street in the area of its intersection with the Garden Ring . The station has no transfer options to other stations, but has two exits - the south exit and the north exit built in 2005. The Mayakovskaya station was named after its opening in honor of the futuristic early Soviet poet Vladimir Mayakovsky .

history

Mayakovskaya opened on September 11, 1938. It was one of the six stations on the 8.5 km long first section of the Samoskvorezkaya Line, which initially led from Teatralnaya to Sokol . Originally, the station, 33 meters below the surface, had a single exit, which was built into the Tchaikovsky concert hall that was built at the same time .

Since the station was built in an area where the ground is relatively stable, as well as due to its low location, it was particularly often used as an air raid shelter during the Battle of Moscow in World War II. In addition, several congresses and other political meetings were held in the spacious platform hall of Mayakovskaya during this period. For example, on November 6, 1941, Head of State Josef Stalin gave a speech during the meeting of the Moscow Council of Deputies on the 24th anniversary of the October Revolution . In the 1950s, the exit hall of the station was expanded to include a second entrance from the odd side of Tverskaya Street.

On September 2, 2005, after several years of construction, the northern exit of Mayakovskaya went into operation, located north of the garden ring and also on Tverskaya Street. At the same time, the south exit was closed for a complete renovation, also in order to replace the escalators that were still installed when the station opened . This work was completed in May 2007, and both exits from Mayakovskaya have been available since then.

architecture

The main architect of Mayakovskaya was Alexei Dushkin , who is also known for designs for a number of other Moscow metro stations and, among other things, for the building of the Detski Mir department store .

Vaulted ceiling in detail

Due to the stable ground, the platform hall of the station could be equipped with much lighter supporting structures than is the case with other subway stations in the center of Moscow, despite its low location. This explains that the Mayakovskaya platform hall is not stabilized with thick pylons , as is usual in Moscow , but with arcade-like rows of columns clad in stainless steel . This gives the hall a very spacious and open shape. The walls were covered alternately with marble and diorite . The round niches in the vault were decorated with mosaics by the artist Alexander Deineka , which, among other things , deal with Soviet aviation. The station lighting is also located in these niches.

In particular, due to the rather unusual steel columns for the Moscow Metro, Mayakovskaya is one of the most architecturally interesting underground stations in the Moscow network and is partly attributed to the Art Deco style . In retrospect, Duschkin's concept turned out to be very successful: the station 's design was awarded the main prize at a New York exhibition in 1938 . In 2001 Mayakovskaya was included in the list of the most valuable architectural monuments in Moscow and is therefore under special monument protection.

North exit opened in 2005 with futuristic motifs

The halls of the north exit, built in 2005, were equipped with new ceiling mosaics, in which futuristic motifs are combined with quotes from Mayakowski's poems. The hall is lavishly equipped with marble columns and stainless steel elements, also in the functional area; A bust of the poet is placed in the entrance vestibule.
Compared to the old one, the new exit has a special feature: from the platform to the counter hall there is an intermediate level that is a few meters lower than the platform.

particularities

With the beginning of the use of eight-car trains on Line 2 in the late 1980s, the platforms of the Mayakovskaya station were extended by a few meters into the route tunnels to allow exit from all doors. The exit area, which is particularly narrow due to the arching of the tunnel and starts at the level of the last passenger door, is indicated by appropriate announcements.
