Mako Vunipola (born January 13, 1991 in Wellington , New Zealand ) is an English rugby union player . He plays as a pillar for the England national team , the British and Irish Lions and the Saracens .

childhood and education

Vunipola was born in Wellington as the son of former Tongan rugby player Fe'ao Vunipola . His father moved to the Pontypool RFC in Wales in 1998 , so Mako first went to school there and played rugby. He later moved to Millfield private school in Somerset, England . So he qualified for England's youth selections.

Career

society

Vunipola made his English Premiership debut for Bristol Rugby in 2010 . In 2011 he moved to the Saracens, for whom he has been active ever since. With the Sarries he has won four championship titles (2015, 2016, 2018 and 2019) and three times the European Rugby Champions Cup (2016, 2017, 2019).

National team

Vunipola made his England debut against Fiji in November 2012 . The following year he was part of the British and Irish Lions for the first time and was used in all three games of the test series against Australia . In 2017 he was nominated again for the Lions and played again in all games of the test series, this time New Zealand was the opponent . He made his first attempt for England in 2014 against Italy . In 2015 he was part of the World Cup squad and was used in all four games. In 2016, he won the Six Nations Grand Slam with the national team .

Private life

Mako Vunipola comes from a rugby family. In addition to his father, his uncles Manu Vunipola and Elisi Vunipola (both Tongan national players), his brother Billy Vunipola (English national player and team-mate with the Saracens) and cousins Taulupe Faletau (Welsh national player) and Manu Vunipola (also active with the Saracens) professional rugby players. His mother is a pastor in High Wycombe .
