history

The association was founded in 1868. In 1902 they joined the Monmoutshire League and has since taken part regularly in the Welsh league operation. In 1904 Pontypool won the championship title in Monmoutshire for the first time. In 1908 he met a foreign club for the first time, the Racing Club de France from France . Two years later, the players traveled to Bordeaux to play against regional selections. In 1914 the club won the unofficial Welsh National Championship for the first time. In 1927 the New Zealand Māori traveled to Wales and played against Pontypool, among others. The Welsh won the game. In the same year were Waratahs of New South Wales in Australia defeated.

During the Second World War , gaming in Wales came to a standstill, but a selection of soldiers from Pontypool met an army selection from New Zealand in 1941 . At the end of the war, the club moved from the Recreation Ground to Pontypool Park, where they have been playing ever since. Over the next few decades they often joined forces with other clubs in the area to compete against various selections from the southern hemisphere . In 1971, the club experienced the worst season in its history. For the first and only time he finished last in the Welsh championship. In the following years, however, it developed into one of the dominant clubs in Wales. Especially the first row, called Viet Gwent, made for many successes. It was made up of Graham Price , Bobby Windsor and Charlie Faulkner and was sung about by Max Boyce , among others .

In 1976 and 1979 the Pontypools selection traveled to the United States . In 1983, Germany was the club's target for the first time, where he competed against the Welsh regiment, among others. Five years later they traveled to Germany again. In the next few seasons Pontypool played against New Zealand and toured Kenya . With the introduction of the official Welsh league structure, the club was placed in the first division. In 1995 they were relegated, but soon returned back to the top division. Since then, the club has wavered between the Premier and First Division.

Since 2003 the club has provided players for the Newport Gwent Dragons , one of four Welsh teams in the multinational Magners League .
