The New South Wales Waratahs (also known as HSBC Waratahs in connection with the main sponsor , often simply called Waratahs or Tahs ) are a rugby union team from the Australian city of Sydney . She plays in the international super rugby league. The home games are played at the Allianz Stadium .
The Waratahs, named after the flower of the same name , have existed since 1882 and were the selection team of the clubs represented in the regional association of New South Wales Rugby Union (NSWRU) for more than a hundred years . In 1996 the team was converted into a franchise representing the state of New South Wales (with the exception of the southernmost part). The players will continue to be provided by the members of the NSWRU, but now on a professional level.
history
Before the advent of super rugby, the Waratahs were a selection team made up of players from various clubs across the state. The first game between New South Wales and Queensland took place in 1882. In the same year, the Waratahs played for the first time in New Zealand . Because of World War I and competition from rugby league , there were no more games for several years. In 1921 the Waratahs toured New Zealand and won nine out of ten games, including the international against the All Blacks .
The most famous selection of the Waratahs was that of 1927-28, which traveled to Great Britain, France and North America. They won 24 of the 31 games, and twice they were drawn. The Waratahs also enjoyed great success in the following decades. In 1937, for example, they won against the Springboks , the national team of South Africa .
With the establishment of the professional league Super 12 (since 2006 Super 14), NSWRU converted the selection team consisting of amateurs into a franchise with professional players. In the first few years, the Waratahs always moved in the middle. In 2002 they reached the semi-finals for the first time, but were subject to the Brumbies . In 2005 and 2008 they lost in the final against the Crusaders , in 2006 in the semifinals against the Hurricanes . In 2014, the Waratahs won the championship for the first time.
