Robert William "Bobby" Windsor (born January 31, 1948 in Newport ) is a former Welsh rugby union player . He played as a hooker for the Welsh national team and the British and Irish Lions .
Windsor began his career in the back line but soon switched to his position as a hacker. He played for Brynglas, Cross Keys and especially Pontypool, where he formed a legendary front row with Graham Price and Charlie Faulkner ("Viet Gwent"), which was sung about by singer Max Boyce , among others . In addition to his career as a rugby player, he went to work in a steel mill, which helped him in the crowd .
1973 Windsor first played for the Welsh national team, the opponent was Australia . On his debut he also made the only attempt of his career. Because of his outstanding performance, he was considered for the British and Irish Lions the following year and traveled with them to South Africa , where the Lions selection went down in history as "invincible". She didn't lose a single game during the entire tour, the Springboks could only win one draw.
Along with Price and Faulkner, Windsor played a major role in the Welsh success of the 1970s. Towards the end of the decade, Wales won the Five Nations Championship four times , including the Grand Slam twice . In 1977 he was nominated again for a Lions tour. He was used in the first test against the All Blacks , but then lost his regular place to Peter Wheeler . In 1979 he ended his career.
In 2005, Windsor diagnosed doctors with prostate cancer . Because of the depression resulting from this diagnosis, his second marriage broke up. His first wife, like one of his daughters-in-law and one of his granddaughters, had died of cancer. He has a total of six children, 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
