Malachi Martin

Malachi Martin SJ (Irish: Maolsheachlann Breandán Ó Máirtín, born July 23, 1921 in Ballylongford , † July 27, 1999 in New York City ) was a Catholic priest , at times Jesuit and author .

Life

Martin was Irish and grew up in Ireland , where he also attended school. He was ordained a priest of the Jesuit Order and was a professor of palaeography at the Pontifical Biblical Institute. From 1958 he was secretary to Cardinal Augustin Bea and in particular was involved in the preparation of the Second Vatican Council. In 1964 he withdrew to New York out of disappointment and became an American citizen.

He was also a Jesuit critic of the Second Vatican Council . Among other things, he wrote the book The Last Pope, in which he depicts the change in the Church.
