The Malaita spectacled bird ( Zosterops stresemanni ) is a little researched bird species from the spectacled family . It is endemic to the Solomon Islands -Insel Malaita . The species epithet honors the German ornithologist Erwin Stresemann .

features

The Malaita spectacle bird reaches a size of 13.5 centimeters. For males, weights of up to 22.2 grams are known and for females weights of up to 21.7 grams. The crown of the head, the sides of the head and the top are olive green. The parting is slightly faded gray-brown. There is no eye ring . The reins are ash gray. The dark area around the eyes is not feathered. The fists and feathers are blackish-brown with broad, sulfur-yellow edges. The throat, chest and flanks are light olive green with faint yellow banding. The belly and under tail-covers are yellow. The iris is light brown. The upper beak is greyish, the lower beak is dull orange with a grayish tip. The legs are greenish-gray. The sexes look the same. Juvenile birds have not yet been described. His singing is very melodious and similar to a throttle.

habitat

The Malaita spectacled bird inhabits primary and secondary forests as well as scrubland and gardens from sea level to altitudes of 1,100 meters.

status

There is no information about the stock. It appeared to be widespread from the coast to the mountains in the mid-1940s. During surveys between 1990 and 2004 it was described as rare in the coastal plain and fairly common inland around Auki. The IUCN classifies it as “ not at risk ”.
