Malcolm Knowles

Malcolm Shepherd Knowles (born August 24, 1913 in Montana , † November 27, 1997 in Fayetteville (Arkansas) ) was an American adult educator ( adult education ) or andragoge, known for his draft of a theory of andragogy ; great influence on the development of humanistic ( humanism ) learning and educational theory is ascribed to him.

Knowles graduated from Harvard University in 1934. From 1940 to 1951 (interrupted by military service in the United States Navy ) he worked in adult education for the Christian Young People's Association , first in Boston, then in Chicago. He then became director of the Adult Education Association of the USA . From 1959 he taught for 14 years at Boston University . From 1974 until his retirement in 1979 he taught at North Carolina State University .
