The Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company Limited , shortly MIFCO or Mifco is a Maldivian state-owned enterprises. Mifco was founded on November 1st, 1993 with the aim of bundling state activities for processing and exporting fishery products.

Markets and Products

Mifco's approach is to manufacture its products as environmentally friendly as possible and to market products that are 100 percent of Maldivian origin. The main markets are Great Britain, Germany , France, Japan , Thailand and Sri Lanka .

Mifco's main products are various types of tuna ( yellowfin tuna and bonita), which are processed and sold in various forms. In addition to canned tuna with oil, water and various dressings , fresh fish and frozen fish are also exported. Mifco is also a large producer of fish meal .

fleet

Mifco's own fishing fleet consists of 20 fishing boats, three boats for fishing with longline and is supplemented by a transport ship and a tanker. The five reefer vessels belonging to the fleet have a capacity of 2000 tons (t). Boats from local fishermen also work for Mifco and supply the collection boats and processing facilities.

quality control

The company and its processing companies are certified according to EFSIS (European Food Safety Inspection Service), HACCP , CLAS (Campden Laboratory Accreditation Scheme) and ISO 9000 . Some of the Mifco factories are also monitored by independent testing institutes and organizations, precisely in order to ensure consistent quality for the important markets of Europe and Asia.

Processing facilities

Felivaru Fisheries Complex

In 1977 the Felivaru Fisheries Complex (FFC) was opened on the island of Felivaru as a joint venture between the Maldivian government and a Japanese company and operated a packaging plant for cans with a capacity of 8 t. When the Japanese partner company left in 1982, the government decided to take over the factory. The plant output was increased to 50 t in 1982 and 1986. Today the output is 85 t per 8-hour shift.

FFC produces its cans itself and also produces up to 250 tons of fish meal per day. Felivaru is able to produce 15 t of ice from salt water and 80 t of fresh water and to store around 100 t of ice. In addition, there are cold store capacities for 750 t of fish and the freezing of 40 t of fish per shift is possible.

Koodoo Fisheries Complex

The catch from fishermen in the southern regions used to be picked up by collecting vessels and taken to the processing facilities in the north. In order to improve the quality, a fish buying and exporting facility was planned on Koodoo , an island which was called Kubuddoo until the 19th century because of its proximity to the four large fishing islands Vilingilli , Maamendhoo , Dhaandhoo and in the north of the atoll Thinadhoo . The Koodoo Fisheries Complex (KFC) in the south of the Maldives went into operation in 1996.

Today KFC is able to freeze 450 t in 24 hours and has storage capacity for 2000 t. The landing area is suitable for ships up to 2500 t carrying capacity . To supply the fishermen with ice and thus to increase the quality of the fish delivered, Mifco installed an ice-making system with a capacity of 80 t per day.

One of KFC's specialties is the production of katsuobushi from bonito . It is one of the foundations of dashi in Japanese cuisine . The processing takes place there under technical and qualitative supervision by Japanese specialists. The plant was expanded in 2003 and now produces 40 t of Katsuobushi per month for export to Japan .

KFC is equipped with two seawater desalination plants that desalinate 1000 t of water per day. There is also storage capacity for 800 t of water and fuel.

Kan'du Oiy Giri Fish Village

The Kandu Oiy Giri Fish Village (KFV) began operating on February 26, 1999. KFV was planned from the outset for the production of fresh fish products in order to penetrate the fresh fish markets in Japan and Europe. That's why KFV is only 6 kilometers from Malé International Airport .

KFV quickly became one of the largest exporters of refrigerated products to Europe. In 2003 the facility was expanded to supply sashimi quality fish for the Japanese market. These products are mostly fished with a line, refrigerated and then flown by air to Europe and Asia. 95 percent of the fish come to Europe from KFV.

When Mifco decided to re-enter the fresh fish market in 1997, they looked for an uninhabited island in the vicinity of the airport and the capital Malé , as otherwise the transport route for the building material would have been too long. On Kandu Oiy Giri , the entire infrastructure with processing plants, seawater desalination, cooling and the offices and accommodation for the workers was rebuilt.

A new port was also built for the commissioning of the island. Breakwaters were built around the island to provide a safe anchorage for the fishing boats.

10 tons of vacuum-packed fish can be produced per day . In addition to tuna, swordfish and marline are processed for export, 88 percent of which is exported to the UK. In addition to the aforementioned products, special products are also made for the local market.

Addu

At the beginning of the 21st century, Mifco decided to build another factory for the processing of fresh fish and the production of Katsuobushi. Here, too, a location near an international airport was chosen, namely the airport in Gan , which is located in the Addu Atoll . A regional port on the island of Hithadhoo was also to be developed through the establishment of the Addu fresh fish factory .

The factory was designed to process 15 tons of yellowfin tuna and produce 20 tons of katsuobushi and 50 tons of ice per day. A 210 m long pier was to be built for the factory and a complete infrastructure created.

The work in Addu should be completed in June 2005 and create 140 jobs. However, it is not known whether the project was completed.

Others

  • In order to improve the supply of the Maldives and to expand the use of Koodoo and thus the KFC, bananas , papaya , pumpkin , eggplant and peppers were cultivated on the island . Furthermore, coconut , horseradish tree and breadfruit tree naturally grow on the island.
  • Mifco has been marketing a large number of its own products in the Maldives since 1998 under its own brand name “Fasmeeru”. The products on offer are primarily tailored to Maldivian tastes and consist mainly of smoked and dried skipjack, a type of tuna, and "Rihaakuru", a local delicacy. In addition to delivery to shops, Fasmeeru is also marketed through its own shop in Malé.
