The yellowfin tuna ( Thunnus albacares ), also called ahi , is a species of tuna and an important food fish . It occurs in all tropical and temperate oceans and seas, but not in the Mediterranean . The fish is internationally known under the name Ahi, which comes from Hawaiian and is representative of a whole type of food (see Ahi Poke ).

The second dorsal fin and the anal fin are both bright yellow, which is where the tuna got its name. The colors of the body change from metallic blue on the back to silver on the stomach. There are also 20 vertical lines on the stomach. It becomes up to 240 centimeters long and 200 kilograms.

The yellowfin tuna likes to group with other fish of the same size, including other types of tuna. Larger specimens have also been seen with dolphins , porpoises and whale sharks . The diet of yellowfin tuna consists of other fish, crustaceans and squids .

In the commercial fishery, yellowfin tuna is caught with purse seine and longlines . Most of it is then sold frozen or canned. The yellowfin tuna is also popular with sport fishermen because of its speed and size.

Hazardous situation

The International Union for Conservation of Nature ( IUCN) has the yellowfin tuna on the Red List of Threatened Species and presents it as Near Threatened . However, it considers a reassessment of the species necessary.
