The foxglove or bell-shaped Verpel ( Verpa conica ) is a type of mushroom from the family of morel relatives .

features

The foxglove Verpel sometimes also shows a slightly wrinkled hat surface.

The fruit bodies ( apothecia ) of the foxglove Verpel, which consist of hat and stem, reach heights of up to 12 centimeters. The hat is 1–4 centimeters high and 2–3 centimeters wide, it is egg-shaped when young and becomes thimble to bell-shaped with age, it is only fused with the stem in the upper section and rounded at the top. Its surface is colored honey to red-brown and smooth or only slightly wrinkled, the underside is tinted ocher. The hollow stem is smooth to slightly wavy, colored white to ocher and weakly horizontally banded by dark scales.

The Foxglove Verpel is a soil saprobiont , it grows in floodplains and brooks, in hedges, on meadows and on forest edges, it prefers limestone soils. The fruiting bodies appear in Central Europe from April to May. The species is rare.
