The Verpeln ( Verpa ) are a genus of the hose mushrooms .
features
The fruiting bodies of the Verpeln are long-stemmed, hollow apothecia , the head part of which can be smooth or brain-like. In contrast to the related morels , the pimples do not have sterile ribs. The head section is only attached to the tip of the handle and hangs freely at the edge. The asci contain two to eight spores, depending on the species, they are about 20 to 25 µm long, smooth, broadly ellipsoid and have small granules (grains) at the tips.
ecology
The Verpeln are saprophytic soil dwellers that occur in bushes and meadows.

Surname
The name of the genus is derived from the Latin verpa for male member and refers to the shape of the fruiting bodies.
