The maleimides are a group of organic - chemical substances . They are imides of maleic acid which are substituted on the nitrogen atom with an alkyl group or aryl group . They are characterized by high reactivity towards additions to the C = C double bonds in Michael additions or Diels-Alder reactions .

Maleimides are made by reacting maleic anhydride with amines and then dehydrating them.

Bismaleimide-S

Bismaleimides consist of two maleimide groups connected to one another and are used as crosslinkers for heat-resistant resins, such as bismaleimide based on 4,4'-diaminodiphenylmethane .

Maleimide and substituted derivatives serve both as photoinitiators and as monomeric starting materials for anionic or radical homopolymerizations and copolymerizations . N-alkyl maleimides and N-aryl maleimides serve as polymerizable monomers for temperature-resistant polyimides and are components of mixtures for coating car parts, of sealing compounds on electronic components and of adhesives.

Maleimides are also used in photolithography and imaging. In organic synthesis they are important dienophiles in Diels-Alder reactions as well as alkene components in 1,3-dipolar cycloadditions and [2 + 2] cycloadditions. They are important alkenes for Michael additions and serve as precursors for the synthesis of pyrrolines , pyrrolidines and pyrrolidones . Because of their polyfunctionality, they can be used well in tandem reactions.
