The Malham Tarn is a lake in the British county of North Yorkshire .
It is about 800 meters in diameter and is located in the Yorkshire Dales . The distance to the town of Malham , after which it is named, is about 4 kilometers. The lake is of glacial origin, was artificially enlarged in 1791 and is the center of a nature reserve of the same name . With an area of 62 ha, it is a maximum of 4.4 meters, on average only 2.4 meters deep. Since it is located in an area with heavily calcareous rock, its water is clearly alkaline with a pH of 8.22.
At 377 m high, it is sometimes referred to as the highest lake in England , but is surpassed, for example, by the Innominate Tarn . However, it is considered the highest calcareous lake in the country.
Malham Tarn inspired Charles Kingsley to his novel The Water Babies ( The water Children ).
