Malta Song for Europe 1997 (abbreviation: MSFE 1997 ) was the Maltese preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest 1997 , which took place in Dublin ( Ireland ) after Eimear Quinn won the Eurovision Song Contest the previous year with her song The Voice . The competition was won by Debbie Scerri with the song Let Me Fly . The competition was also known as the Festival tal-Kanzunetta Maltija għall-Ewropa 1997 , but this was also the last year that this was the case because since no one with a Maltese title competed, as in previous years, it was considered better to leave behind the Maltese title of the show. It was also the last year that a live orchestra played the music.

principle

A total of 16 entries were selected by an expert jury to participate in the final, which took place on January 25, 1997 in the Mediterranean Conference Center . The songs were first presented on January 24th and the final took place on January 25th. On January 24th and 25th, as in the previous year, the songs were performed exclusively in English . In contrast to previous years, the scoring was shown for the first time. The jury selected the 16 finalists with 100% of the vote, who entered on January 25th to represent Malta in the Eurovision Song Contest.

There was no semi-final in the preliminary round, but instead a round of introductions on the day before the final.

The artists had the choice of performing their songs in English or Maltese , since both languages are their official language, but they all chose English.

final

In the final, which took place on January 25, 1997, 16 artists sang for victory in the preliminary round. Ultimately, it was won by Debbie Scerri with the song Let Me Fly . The points were awarded by 7 jurors, who each had to award points to each song, so that they awarded each value from 1–10 and 12, 14, 16, 18, 20 and 22 once.
