Malta Song for Europe 1998 (abbreviation: MSFE 1998 ) was the Maltese preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest 1998 , which took place in Birmingham ( England ) after Katrina and the Waves won the Eurovision Song Contest the previous year with their song Love Shine a Light . The competition was won by Chiara Siracusa with the song The One That I Love . This was the first year without a live orchestra in the Maltese preliminary round.
principle
A total of 22 entries were selected by an expert jury, 6 of which had to take part in a semi-final for newcomers, i. H. Artists who had participated in the previous years automatically qualified for the finals. Thus, the 6 semi-finalists started to take part in the final, which took place on February 7, 1998 in the Mediterranean Conference Center . On February 6th and 7th, as in the previous year, the songs were performed exclusively in English . With 100% of the votes, the jury selected the 20 finalists, who entered on February 7th to represent Malta in the Eurovision Song Contest.
The artists had the choice of performing their songs in English or Maltese , since both languages are their official language, but they all chose English.
Semifinals
In the final, which took place on February 6, 1998, 6 artists sang to qualify for the final. Of the 6 newcomers, 4 qualified.

In the final, which took place on February 7, 1998, 22 artists sang to win the preliminary round. Ultimately, it was won by Chiara Siracusa with the song The One That I Love . The points were awarded by 7 jurors, who each had to award points to each song, so that they awarded each value from 1–14 and 16, 18, 20, 22, 24 and 26 once.
