Athletic career

Like his brother Christoph, his football career began at TuS Haltern , for which Malte Metzelder was active until 1997. Malte Metzelder then moved to SpVgg Erkenschwick for a year , and in 1998 he moved to the youth team of Preußen Münster .

The 1.95 m tall defender moved to the Regionalliga team of Preußen Münster in June 2001 and played a total of 52 games in the Regionalliga Nord in two seasons (2001/02 and 2002/03). In the summer of 2003, Metzelder moved to Borussia Dortmund , where his older brother Christoph was also playing at the time. With Borussia Dortmund, Metzelder reached the league cup final in 2003, sixth in 2004 and seventh in 2005 in the 1st Bundesliga . Since Metzelder suffered minor injuries at Borussia Dortmund, he only appeared nine times in the Bundesliga and in 2005 he joined the regional league team VfR Aalen . For the 2007/08 season, Metzelder moved from VfR Aalen to FC Ingolstadt 04 . With FC Ingolstadt 04 he was promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga in 2008, relegated a year later and promoted again in 2010.

In the summer of 2014, Metzelder ended his career because of knee problems.

Management career

After the end of his career, Metzelder began to work as a trainee at FC Ingolstadt 04. At the same time, he completed an extra-occupational MBA distance learning program at Koblenz University . Since April 1, 2017, Metzelder has taken over the post of sports director and the management of the office at his former club Preußen Münster. In the course of the outsourcing of the professional department promoted by Metzelder, SC Preußen Münster 06 Geschäftsleitungs-GmbH appointed Metzelder as the sole managing director of the general partner company on February 18, 2018. After the Preußen Münster finished the 2019/20 season in 18th place and had to relegate to the regional league, Metzelder's work at the club ended.
