Mammillaria baumii is a species of the genus Mammillaria in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors the discoverer Hugo Baum .

description

Mammillaria baumii grows cushion-forming. The individual plant bodies are spherical to egg-shaped and are almost completely covered by the thorns. They grow to be 5 to 7 inches high and 5 to 6 inches in diameter. The warts are shiny green, soft fleshed, cylindrical to conical and without milky sap . The axillae are woolly only in young plants; later naked. The 5 to 11  central spines are slender and straight. They are 1 to 1.8 centimeters in length and are whitish yellow. The extremely thin 30 to 50 radial spines are flexible interlocking, white and have a length of 1.5 centimeters. The broad-funneled flowers are 2.5 to 3 inches long and in diameter. They are bright yellow in color and have a light scent. The elongated to obovate fruits are gray-green. They contain brown, pitted seeds .

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Mammillaria baumii is widespread in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas near San Vicente, where it is rarely found under bushes.

It was first described in 1926 by Friedrich Bödeker .

Synonyms are Dolichothele baumii (Boed.) Werderm. & Buxb. (1951), Ebnerella baumii (Boed.) Buxb. (1951), Mammillaria radiaissima G.E. Lindsay ex RTCraig (1945) and Mammillaria baumii var. Radiaissima (GELindsay ex RTCraig) Neutelings (1985, nom. Inval. ICBN -Article 33.3).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
