Mammillaria bocensis is a species of the genus Mammillaria in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet bocensis means 'from the location Bocas / Mexico'.

description

Mammillaria bocensis usually grows individually, occasionally sprouting with age. The plant body is depressed, spherical to short cylindrical . It is dark green with a reddish to purple tinge and is 8 to 9 centimeters high and also large in diameter. The solid warts are keeled pyramidal and have a milky sap . The axillae are sometimes covered with a little white wool, but mostly bare. The reddish brown central spine with a dark tip is straight to slightly curved. It is only 0.8 to 1.5 centimeters long. The 6 to 8 radial spines are needle-like, lime white to reddish with a dark tip. They are 0.5 to 1.4 inches long.

The broad, funnel-shaped flowers are light pink to greenish with a brownish central stripe. They become 1.5 to 2 inches long. The thick, club-like fruits are colored red. They contain light brown seeds .

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Mammillaria bocensis is common in the Mexican states of Sonora , Sinaloa , Jalisco and Nayarit .

The first description was in 1945 by Robert T. Craig (1902-1986). Synonyms are Mammillaria sonorensis var. Bocensis (RTCraig) E. Kuhn (1981) (nom. Inval. ICBN -Article 33.3), Mammillaria neoschwarzeana Backeb. (1949), Mammillaria rubida F. Schwarz ex Backeb. (1949) and mammillaria bocensis var. Rubida (F.Schwarz Backeb ex.) Repp. (1987).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Vulnerable (VU) ", d. H. listed as endangered.
