Mammillaria boolii is a species of plant in the genus Mammillaria in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The epithet of the species honors the American Herbert W. Bool , the discoverer of the species and founder of the Botanical Garden in Phoenix .
description
Mammillaria boolii usually grows individually, rarely the plant branches out at the base and then forms small groups. The spherical to short cylindrical, light gray-green shoots reach a height of 3.5 centimeters and a diameter of 3 centimeters. The bare axillae are located between the round warts . The species does not produce milky sap . The single, yellow to yellowish-brown central spine is strongly hooked with a dark tip and up to 20 millimeters long. The white, about 20 radial spines are needle-like, straight and lie on the body. They reach a length of 15 millimeters.
The pink to lavender pink flowers have a length and a diameter of 4 centimeters. The club-shaped, orange-colored fruits are up to 30 millimeters long and contain black seeds .
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Mammillaria boolii is common in the lower elevations of the Mexican state of Sonora .
The first description was in 1953 by George Edmund Lindsay . The following species are synonyms : Chilita boolii (GELinds.) Buxb. (1954) (nom. Inval. ICBN -Article 33.3) and Bartschella boolii (GELinds.) Doweld (2000).
In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Near Threatened (NT) ", d. H. listed as low risk.
