Mammillaria vetula is a species of the genus Mammillaria inthe cactus family (Cactaceae). Thespecific epithet vetula means 'elderly'.

description

Mammillaria vetula sprouts abundantly and forms flat cushions. The spherical to cylindrical shoots are glossy gray-green and reach heights of up to 10 centimeters. The warts do not contain any milky sap , are firm to slightly flaccid, bluntly conical and have four sides at the base. The axillae are lightly covered with wool or bare. The 1 to 2 central spines , which can also be missing, are straight, strong and needle-like. They are up to 10 millimeters long. Initially there are 11 to 25, later up to 50 or 11 to 16 radial spines. They are straight, needle-like, thin and white and are 3 to 10 millimeters long.

The lemon-yellow flowers are up to 17 millimeters long. The fruits are whitish to greenish and contain black seeds .

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Mammillaria vetula is common in the Mexican states of Hidalgo , Guanajuato and Querétaro .

It was first described in 1832 by Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius .

The following subspecies are distinguished:

  • Mammillaria vetula subsp. gracilis (Pfeiff.) DRHunt :
    It was first described in 1838 as Mammillaria gracilis by Ludwig Georg Karl Pfeiffer . David Richard Hunt introduced the species in 1997 as a subspecies to Mammillaria vetula . Synonyms are Mammillaria gracilis var. Pulchella Salm-Dyck (1850) and Mammillaria fragilis Salm-Dyck ex K.Brandegee (1900). The central spine is often missing in the subspecies. 11 to 16 radial spines are present. The flowers are only 1.2 inches long. The subspecies is very common in culture.
  • Mammillaria vetula subsp. vetula :
    Synonyms are Chilita vetula (Mart.) Orcutt (1926), Escobariopsis vetula (Mart.) Doweld (2000), Mammillaria magneticola J.Meyrán (1961) and Mammillaria vetula subsp. lacostei Plein & Heinr.Weber (2003). The nominate form usually has 1 to 2 central spines and at least 25 radial spines. The flowers are up to 1.5 inches long.

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
