description

Mammillaria karwinskiana grows singly, occasionally dividing dichotomously or sprouting at the base. The blue-green to dark-green, spherical to short cylindrical shoots are 7 to 10 centimeters high and reach a diameter that is just as large. The solid pyramidal warts contain milky sap . The axillae are covered with bristles. The central spines are completely absent or there is only one subpipe, white or yellowish, with a dark tip and a length of 5.5 centimeters. The 3 to 8 radial spines are sub-like, straight to slightly curved, reddish and become chalky over time. They are 0.4 to 3 inches long.

The funnel-shaped flowers are white with a purple central stripe. They grow up to 2.5 inches long and 1.5 inches in diameter. The bright red fruits contain brown seeds .
