Mammillaria laui is a species of the genus Mammillaria in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors the German cactus researcher Alfred Bernhard Lau .

description

Mammillaria laui grows solitary, spherical or sprouting and becomes 6 centimeters high and 4.5 centimeters in diameter. The densely placed warts are bulbous - conical, non-milky and have a dark green color. The axils are bare or covered with sparse wool. The 30 to 40 fine-needle radial spines, which are only 4 to 8 millimeters long, are bristle-like, irregularly radiant, glassy-white and spreading, covering the body. The 5 to 8  central spines are hardly thicker than the radial spines and only 6 to 7 millimeters long. They are also protruding, glassy yellow with a bulbous, thickened base. The flowers are broadly funneled and are 1.6 to 2 centimeters long with about the same diameter. They are bright carmine pink in color. The whitish fruits are spherical to oblong and only 2 to 6 millimeters long. They contain black seeds .

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Mammillaria laui subsp. dasyacantha

Mammillaria laui is only distributed in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas in mountain regions from 800 to 1700 meters.

It was first described in 1979 by David Richard Hunt .

As synonyms for Mammillaria laui all considered as varieties or forms described species, and Mammillaria subducta (DRHunt) Repp. (1987) Mammillaria dasyacantha (DRHunt) Repp. (1990), Escobariopsis laui (DRHunt) Doweld (2000) and Escobariopsis laui subsp. dasyacantha (DRHunt) Doweld (2000).

The following subspecies are distinguished:

  • Mammillaria laui subsp. dasyacantha (DRHunt) DRHunt :
    The first description was in 1979 as Mammillaria laui f. dasyacantha by David Richard Hunt. DR Hunt introduced the form in 1997 as a subspecies to Mammillaria laui . The subspecies is endemic to Tamaulipas - La Reja and occurs at an altitude of 1400–1700 m.
  • Mammillaria laui subsp. laui :
    The nominate form is only common in Tamaulipas - between Ciudad Victoria and Jaumave, La Reja asbestos mine at an altitude of 1000–1600 m.
  • Mammillaria laui subsp. subducta (DRHunt) DRHunt :
    It was first described in 1979 as Mammillaria laui f. subducta by David Richard Hunt. DR Hunt introduced the form in 1997 as a subspecies to Mammillaria laui . The subspecies is endemic to Tamaulipas and occurs at altitudes of 800 meters. It has more radial thorns.

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Critically Endangered (CR) ", d. H. listed as critically endangered.
