Mammillaria machucae is a species of the genus Mammillaria in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors the Mexican agronomist and plant collector Jose Antonio Machuca Nunez from the Mexican state of Jalisco.

description

Mammillaria machucae grows singly or sprouting from the base and forming groups. The spherical to short columnar shoots are 6 centimeters in diameter and 7 centimeters high. They have a fiber root . The warts are conical, blunt, watery or occasionally milk sap. The axillae are woolly and additionally covered with up to six white bristles. The up to 4  central spines are hooked to different degrees. They are up to 2 inches long and brown with a dark tip. The 19 to 22 radial spines are dirty white and up to 7 millimeters long.

The magenta flowers do not open very wide. They are 1.2 centimeters long and only 7 millimeters in diameter. The green to pink-green fruits are spherical to club-shaped. They are up to 1.3 inches long and 5 millimeters in diameter. They contain reddish brown seeds with a conspicuous lateral hilum .

Distribution and systematics

Mammillaria machucae is distributed in the Mexican state of Jalisco on almost vertical volcanic rocks at an altitude of 1700 meters.

It was first described in 2000 by Walter Alfred Fitz Maurice and Betty Fitz Maurice .

Mammillaria machucae is compared in the Protologue with Mammillaria crinita and Mammillaria limonensis and placed in the Stylothele series , but belongs to the Polyacanthae series due to the characteristics of the bodies and seeds as well as the distribution .
