Mammillaria mainiae is a species of the genus Mammillaria in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors Mrs. FM Main, the discoverer of the species.

description

Mammillaria mainiae grows individually and also sprouts from the base. The spherical to egg-shaped shoots are bright green, sometimes reddish in the axillae. They grow to be 6 to 7 inches high and 10 to 12 inches in diameter. The warts , which become cylindrical to conical, are slightly curved inwards and have no milky sap . The axillae are bare. There are 1 to 2  central spines that are strong, brown or yellow, with a dark tip and up to 1.5 centimeters long. The 8 to 15 radial spines are needle-like, slender, yellow or white with a dark tip and 1.2 centimeters long.

The pink-white flowers have a striking purple-pink central stripe. They are 1.2 centimeters long and have a diameter that is just as large. The fruits remaining within the thorns are small, spherical to ovoid and bright red. They contain black seeds .

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Mammillaria mainiae is common in the US state of Arizona and in the Mexican states of Sonora and Sinaloa .

The first description was in 1900 by Mary Katharine Brandegee . Synonyms are Chilita mainiae (K.Brandegee) Orcutt (1926) and Ebnerella mainiae (K.Brandegee) Buxb. (1951).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
