Mammillaria mercadensis is a species of the genus Mammillaria in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet mercadensis means 'growing near Cerro de Mercado (Mexico)'.

description

Mammillaria mercadensis grows individually or in groups with flattened spherical to spherical olive-green to dark green shoots and reaches a diameter of up to 8 centimeters. The conical to short cylindrical warts often contain milky sap during flowering . The axillae are only sparsely covered in wool and have no bristles. There are 1 to 7 priemliche, up to 14 millimeters long, central spines . They are yellow to deep red to reddish brown and lighter at their base. One, sometimes two, of them are hooked. The 13 to 35 differently finely downy radial spines are white to yellow and 6 to 9 millimeters long.

The bell-shaped, very light magenta to magenta colored flowers are 1 to 2 centimeters long and reach the same diameter. The mostly club-shaped fruits are reddish green and contain brownish black, finely pitted seeds .

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Mammillaria mercadensis is common in the Mexican states of Durango , Jalisco , Guanajuato and Zacatecas . It was first described in 1910 by Carlos Patoni .

Synonyms include Mammillaria berkiana A.B.Lau (1986), Mammillaria nazasensis (Glass & RAFoster) Reppenhagen (1987), Mammillaria rettigiana Boed. (1930), Mammillaria posseltiana Boed. (1932) and Mammillaria sinistrohamata Boed. (1932).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.

Mammillaria berkiana was in the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN in 2002 as " Critically Endangered (CR) , d". H. classified critically endangered. In 2013 it was named " Vulnerable (VU) ", i. H. listed as endangered.

Mammillaria pennispinosa subsp. nazasensis was in the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN in 2002 as " Critically Endangered (CR) ", d. H. classified critically endangered. In 2013 the subspecies was no longer recorded separately and is excluded.

Mammillaria rettigiana was in the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN in 2002 as " Vulnerable (VU) , d". H. classified endangered. In 2013 it was named " Endangered (EN) ", i. H. listed as endangered.

Mammillaria sinistrohamata was in the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN in 2002 as " Least Concern (LC) ", d. H. classified as not endangered in nature. In 2013 it is known as “ Data Deficient (DD) ”, i. H. with insufficient data.
