Mammillaria petrophila is a species of the genus Mammillaria in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet petrophila means '(Latin petrophilus) stones, rocks loving'.

description

Mammillaria petrophila initially grows individually, later sprouting irregularly. The depressed spherical to short cylindrical, gray-green shoots are up to 15 centimeters high with just such a diameter. The short warts are conical and angular. They carry plenty of milky juice . The axillae are covered with thick wool. Up to 7 dark brown central spines are up to 2 inches long. The 8 to 10 radial spines are slender, stiff, needle-like and brown with a dark tip. They are 1 to 1.5 inches long.

The bright greenish yellow flowers have a dark central stripe. Sometimes yellow or light yellow flowers were also observed. They are up to 2 inches in diameter and just as long. The fruits are red and contain brown seeds .

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Mammillaria petrophila is common in the Mexican state of Baja California Sur .

The first description of Mammillaria petrophila was made in 1905 by Mary Katharine Brandegee . Synonyms of Mammillaria petrophila K.Brandegee are Mammillaria gummifera var. Petrophila (K.Brandegee) E. Kuhn (1981, nom. Inval. ICBN -Article 33.3), Mammillaria gatesii M.E.Johnes (1937), Mammillaria baxteriana (HEGates) Boed. ex Backeb. & FMKnuth (1936), Mammillaria marshalliana (HEGates) Boed. ex Backeb. (1936) and Mammillaria pacifica (HEGates) Boed. ex Backeb. (1936).

The following subspecies are distinguished:

  • Mammillaria petrophila subsp. arida (Rose ex Quehl) DRHunt :
    It was first described in 1913 as Mammillaria arida by Joseph Nelson Rose . David Richard Hunt introduced the species in 1998 as a subspecies to Mammillaria petrophila . The subspecies has 4 to 7 central spines. The flowers are cream to light yellow.
  • Mammillaria petrophila subsp. baxteriana (HEGates) DRHunt :
    It was first described in 1934 as Neomammillaria baxteriana by Howard Elliott Gates (1895–1957). David Richard Hunt introduced the species in 1998 as a subspecies to Mammillaria petrophila . The subspecies has only one central spine. The flowers are yellow.
  • Mammillaria petrophila subsp. petrophila :
    The nominate form has 1 to 2 central spines. The flowers are bright greenish yellow.

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Vulnerable (VU) ", d. H. listed as endangered.
