Mammillaria petterssonii is a species of the genus Mammillaria in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors the German cactus collector Pettersson, the friend of the cactus specialist and owner of a cactus nursery in Birkenwerder near Berlin Heinrich Hildmann .

description

Mammillaria petterssonii usually grows individually. The spherical shoots are cloudy, light green and up to 12 centimeters in diameter. The triangular warts are large and contain plenty of milky juice . The axillae are covered with wool. The 6 to 7  central spines are orange-brown. With age they become whitish with a dark tip. They are up to 2 inches long. The 10 or more radial spines are stiff, straight, and white. They are 2 to 10 millimeters long. The top ones are shorter and less developed.

The pink to white flowers have a reddish central stripe. They are up to 2.5 inches in diameter and just as long. The fruits are purple-pink. They contain brown seeds .

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Mammillaria petterssonii is common in the Mexican states of Aguascalientes , Guanajuato , Jalisco , Querétaro , San Luis Potosí, and Zacatecas .

It was first described in 1886 by Heinrich Hildmann . Synonyms of Mammillaria petterssonii Hildm. are Mammillaria obscura Hildm. (1891), Mammillaria heeseana McDowell (1896), Mammillaria obscura var. Heeseana (McDowell) E. Kuhn (1981, nom. Inval. ICBN -Article 33.3) and Mammillaria apozolensis Repp. (1987).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
