Mammillaria rekoi is a species of the genus Mammillaria in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors the Mexican doctor and ethnobotanist Blas Pablo Reko , who comes from Austria.

description

Mammillaria rekoi grows individually, sometimes forming groups. The green shoots are spherical to short cylindrical in shape. They grow up to 6 inches high and 5 to 6 inches in diameter. The conical to cylindrical warts sometimes contain milk juice . The 4 to 7  central spines are slightly stronger than the radial spines. They are hooked or sometimes straight, brown and 1 to 1.5 centimeters long. The 20 to 30 fine needle radial spines are white to golden yellow and 4 to 6 millimeters long.

The deep purple to pink colored flowers have a darker central stripe. They are up to 1.5 inches long. The fruits are red. They contain brown seeds .

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Mammillaria rekoi is common in the Mexican state of Oaxaca .

It was first described in 1923 as Neomammillaria rekoi by Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose . Friedrich Karl Johann Vaupel introduced the species to Mammillaria in 1925 .

The following subspecies are distinguished:

  • Mammillaria rekoi subsp. aureispina (ABLau) DRHunt :
    The first description was in 1983 as Mammillaria rekoi var. aureispina by Alfred Bernhard Lau . David Richard Hunt introduced the variety in 1997 as a subspecies to Mammillaria rekoi . Synonyms are Mammillaria aureispina (ABLau) Repp. (1987) and Mammillaria pullihamata Backeb. ex Repp. (1987). The subspecies usually grows individually, sometimes with multiple shoots. It has 5 to 7 central spines and 20 to 30 golden yellow radial spines.
  • Mammillaria rekoi subsp. leptacantha (ABLau) DRHunt :
    The first description was in 1983 as Mammillaria rekoi var. leptacantha by Alfred Bernhard Lau. David Richard Hunt introduced the variety in 1997 as a subspecies to Mammillaria rekoi . A synonym is Mammillaria leptacantha (ABLau) Repp. (1987). The subspecies forms groups with up to seven shoots. It has 4 to 6 central spines and 27 to 30 radial spines.
  • Mammillaria rekoi subsp. rekoi :
    Synonyms are Ebnerella rekoi (Britton & Rose) Buxb. (1951), Mammillaria pseudorekoi Boed. (1933), Mammillaria rekoiana R.T. Craig (1945), Mammillaria mitlensis Bravo (1956), Mammillaria krasuckae Repp. (1987) Mammillaria sanjuanensis Repp. (1987) and Mammillaria albrechtiana Wohlschl. (1989). The nominate form always grows individually with only four central spines and 20 white radial spines.

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
