Mammillaria schumannii is a species of the genus Mammillaria inthe cactus family (Cactaceae). The epithet of the species honors the German botanist and cactus specialist Karl Moritz Schumann .
description
Mammillaria schumannii usually forms cushions. The spherical shoots are mostly gray-green, sometimes with a purple hue. They reach heights and diameters of 2 to 4 centimeters. The warts do not contain milky sap , are short, thick and square at the base. The axillae are slightly woolly at first and later become bare. The common one middle thorn , rarely 2 to 4 are present, is strong, pure white to dark brown and becomes 10 to 15 millimeters long. One of the central spines is usually hooked. The 9 to 15 radial spines are needle-like, thin and white with a dark tip. They are 6 to 12 millimeters long.
The bell-shaped, funnel-shaped, pink- red flowers are 30 to 40 millimeters in diameter. They have a very short flower tube. The sepals are lanceolate, pointed. The broad lanceolate petals have a tapering tip and a spreading hem. The stylus is slender, green to brown pink scar in six parts.
The almost dry, scarlet-red fruits are 15 to 20 millimeters long and contain black seeds .
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Mammillaria schumannii is common in the Mexican state of Baja California Sur .
The first description was in 1891 by Heinrich Hildmann († 1895). Bartschella schumannii is a synonym . It comes from Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose , who placed the species in their monotypical genus Bartschella in 1923 , which is no longer recognized today.
In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Endangered (EN) ," d. H. listed as endangered.
