Mammillaria sonorensis is a species of the genus Mammillaria in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet sonorensis means 'from Sonora'.
description
Mammillaria sonorensis first grows individually and later forms large cushions. The flattened, spherical shoots are blue-green and measure 6 to 8 centimeters in diameter. The not sharply edged, but spherical, square, keeled warts are firm and contain plenty of milky juice . The axillae are woolly, occasionally covered with bristles. There are up to 4 central spines . They are sub-like to needle-like, reddish brown and 0.5 to 4.5 inches long. The 8 to 15 radial spines are slender, needle-like, whitish to cream-colored with a brownish tip and 1 to 20 millimeters long.
The deep pink colored flowers have a darker central stripe. They measure up to 2 inches in diameter as well as in length. The club-shaped fruits are scarlet and up to 1.2 centimeters long. They contain brown seeds .
Distribution and systematics
Mammillaria sonorensis is common in the Mexican state of Sonora .
It was first described in 1940 by Robert T. Craig . Synonyms of Mammillaria sonorensis DC. are Mammillaria craigii G.E. Linds . (1942), Mammillaria bellisiana R.T. Craig (1945), Mammillaria movensis R.T. Craig (1945), Mammillaria tesopacensis R.T. Craig (1945) and Mammillaria tinuvieliae Laferr. (1989).
Mammillaria sonorensis is of Jonas Martin Lüthy as a synonym of Mammillaria standleyi considered.
