Mammillaria standleyi is a species of the genus Mammillaria in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors the American botanist Paul Carpenter Standley , who is also the discoverer of the species.

description

Mammillaria standleyi mainly grows singly or forming large cushions. The flattened light green shoots are spherical in shape and up to 10 centimeters in diameter. The conical, firm warts are keeled and contain plenty of milky sap . The axillae are covered with wool when young, later with 5 to 7 white bristles. The 4  central spines are reddish brown. They stand out and are 5 to 9 millimeters long. The more or less than 16 radial spines are slightly expanded. They are white with a dark tip and 4 to 8 millimeters long.

The funnel-shaped flowers are purple. They measure 1.2 inches in length and in diameter. The club-shaped fruits are scarlet red. They grow to be 1.2 to 1.6 inches long and contain brown seeds .

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Mammillaria standleyi is common in the Mexican states of Chihuahua , Sonora, and Sinaloa .

It was first described in 1923 as Neomammillaria standleyi by Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose . Charles Russell Orcutt introduced the species to Mammillaria in 1926 . Synonyms of Mammillaria standleyi (Britton & Rose) Orcutt are Neomammillaria xanthina Britton & Rose (1923), Chilita xanthina (Britton & Rose) Orcutt (1926), Mammillaria xanthina (Britton & Rose) Boed. (1933) and Mammillaria auricantha R.T. Craig (1945), Mammillaria floresii Backeb. (1949).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
