Mammillaria surculosa is a species of the genus Mammillaria in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet surculosa means '(Latin surculosus) richly branched'.
description
Mammillaria surculosa grows individually or with many branches, with a strong taproot. The spherical shoots are dark green. They grow to be 3 inches high and up to 2 inches in diameter. The tapered, cylindrically shaped, flaccid warts do not contain milk juice . They are soft and have slightly rounded tips. The axillae are bare. An amber-yellow, needle-like central spine is present. It is hooked with a dark tip and is 2 inches long. The up to 15 radial spines are white and 8 to 10 millimeters long.
The funnel-shaped, sulfur-yellow flowers smell pleasant. They measure up to 1.8 centimeters in diameter. The green to greenish brown fruits contain brown seeds .
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Mammillaria surculosa is common in the Mexican states of San Luis Potosí and Tamaulipas .
It was first described in 1931 by Friedrich Bödeker . Synonyms of Mammillaria surculosa Boed. are Dolichothele surculosa (Boed.) Backeb. (1951) and Ebnerella surculosa (Boed.) Buxb. (1951).
In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Endangered (EN) ," d. H. listed as endangered.
