Mammillaria wiesingeri is a species of the genus Mammillaria in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors the German cactus collector Wiesinger from Waldshut in Bavaria, who is also the discoverer of the species.

description

Mammillaria wiesingeri grows individually with depressed shoots that are spherical and cloudy green. They grow up to 4 inches high and 8 inches in diameter and have thick roots. The slender warts are pyramidal in shape. They are slightly angular, somewhat limp and without milky juice . The axillae are bare or occasionally have bristles. The up to 4  central spines , rarely 5 to 6, are reddish brown and up to 6 millimeters long. The 13 to 20 radial spines are very thin, needle-like, glassy white and 5 to 6 millimeters long.

The clear carmine red flowers measure 1 centimeter in length and diameter. The slender, club-shaped fruits are carmine red. They grow up to 1 centimeter long and contain brown seeds .

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Mammillaria wiesingeri is common in the Mexican states of Hidalgo and Mexico .

It was first described in 1933 by Friedrich Bödeker .

The following subspecies are distinguished:

  • Mammillaria wiesingeri subsp. apamensis (Repp.) DRHunt :
    It was first described in 1987 as Mammillaria apamensis by Werner Reppenhagen . David Richard Hunt introduced the species in 1997 as a subspecies to Mammillaria wiesingeri . Synonyms are Mammillaria erectacantha C.F. Forst. (1847), Mammillaria mundtii K.Schum. (1903) and Mammillaria apamensis var. Pratensis Repp. (1987). The subspecies has only 1 to 2 central spines and 13 to 16 radial spines.
  • Mammillaria wiesingeri subsp. wiesingeri :
    The nominate form has 4 central spines or more and 18 to 20 radial spines.

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is called " Data Deficient (DD) ", i. H. with insufficient data.
