Mammillaria xaltianguensis is a species of the genus Mammillaria in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet xaltianguensis refers to the occurrence of the species in the village of Xaltianguis in the Mexican state of Guerrero.

description

Mammillaria xaltianguensis usually grows individually or occasionally in groups. The green shoots are cylindrical in shape. They grow up to 8 inches high and 7 to 8 inches in diameter. The warts are slightly square. Milky sap is only present in the plant body, not in the warts. The axillae are covered with sparse wool and 8 to 12 millimeter long bristles. The 3 to 5  central spines are partially hooked. They are needle-like, purple-brown to yellowish brown with a reddish tip, which later becomes whitish and 6 to 12 millimeters long. The 16 to 20 radial spines are bristle-like, translucent white and 5 to 6 millimeters long.

The 1.7 cm long flowers are more or less light pink to yellowish or even carmine red. The green fruits have a yellowish tip. They contain brown seeds .

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Mammillaria xaltianguensis is common in the Mexican states of Guerrero and Michoacán .

The first description was in 1973 by Hernándo Sánchez-Mejorada .

The following subspecies are distinguished:

  • Mammillaria xaltianguensis subsp. bambusiphila (Repp.) DRHunt :
    It was first described in 1986 as Mammillaria bambusiphila by Werner Reppenhagen . David Richard Hunt introduced the species in 1997 as a subspecies to Mammillaria xaltianguensis . A synonym is Mammillaria bambusiphila var. Parva Repp. (1987). The subspecies has carmine-red flowers, which are up to 1.7 centimeters long.
  • Mammillaria xaltianguensis subsp. xaltianguensis :
    A synonym is Mammillaria xaltianguensis var. aguilensis Repp. (1987) The nominate form has light pink to yellowish flowers that are up to 1.2 centimeters long.

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is called " Data Deficient (DD) ", i. H. with insufficient data.
