description

Mammoth cave sinkhole

The cave is about 25 meters long, up to 5 meters wide and 14 meters high. It has two openings. An entrance is on the east side of a dolomite dome . The second entrance is a collapse doline . The cave is closed to the public due to scientific excavations.

The cave is shown in the cave register Fränkische Alb (HFA) under K 6 and by the Bavarian State Office for the Environment as geotope 176H003. See also the list of geotopes in the Eichstätt district .

history

The cave was discovered by a forester in 1903 and examined by Karl Gareis and Max Schlosser in 1911/1912 . Among other things, the well-preserved skeleton of a mammoth and the remains of another specimen were found, as well as the bones of four woolly rhinos , three steppe bisons , two cave hyenas and ten reindeer . The animals probably lived during the Weichsel or Würm glaciation about 50,000 years ago and fell into the water of a sinkhole .

Some of the finds are in the Prehistory and Early History Museum in Eichstätt in the Altmühltal Nature Park on the Willibaldsburg .
