Mampe half and half
Mampe half and half is a bitter bitters made from bitter oranges . The herbal liqueur is based on a recipe by the physician Carl Mampe from 1831. After the founding of companies by subsequent family members and some relocations of the location, the manufacturers of the brew came together in 1965 and have continued to sell the product successfully ever since.
history
Originally he was trained in 1831 by the general practitioner and Royal Prussian Secret Medical Councilor Dr. med. Carl Mampe in the Pomeranian Stargard as a remedy for cholera made from herbs and schnapps and sold in pharmacies. Carl Mampe passed the recipe on to his stepbrothers Ferdinand Johann Mampe and Carl Mampe, who both founded companies for production. In 1837 Ferdinand Johann Mampe started production in Stargard in Western Pomerania, which was relocated to Hamburg after the Second World War . From 1852 the stepbrother of the same name Carl Mampe produced in Köslin until he founded Carl Mampe AG in Berlin in 1877 and relocated the company there. The restaurants run under the name Mampe's Gute Stube existed for distribution . Both companies sold the bitters throughout Germany and were in competition with each other. In 1965, the Berlin company Carl Mampe AG, which had belonged to the owner of the fine detergent factory Rei-Werke , Willi Maurer, since 1964 , and the Hamburg company F. J. Mampe KG decided to work together.
Derived use of the liquor name
Young half-Jews in Berlin called themselves half and half after the bitter Mampe during the Nazi era . During the Second World War, some of the Jewish soldiers in the Wehrmacht also called themselves Mampe half and half .
advertising
At the turn of the century, an elephant was the logo of the gastric bitter ( bitter drops ), which can also be found on the back of the old square 0.5 liter bottles in the glass. The elephant has been a pendant on all bottles from Berlin's Carl Mampe AG since 1951 . Two elephants in the Berlin Zoo were named after the company founders Carl and Mampe in 1957 . An additional catchy name for the herbal liqueur was Mampe half and half with the mold . The little white elephant in relief hung from the neck of the bottle, and the label showed a wagon pulled by white horses.
The Berlin slogan from 1962 was: "In this case you need him, Mampe half and half Berlin". In 1969 the manufacturer advertised: “Mampe half and half is a whole thing”. In the 1977/1978 and 1978/1979 seasons, Mampe was the shirt sponsor of the Bundesliga club Hertha BSC . The Hamburg company advertised with a monk. This saying has been used since 2013: “None for everyone. Only for Berlin ”. Accordingly, the previously nationwide marketing is now concentrated exclusively on Berlin . From the 21st century, Mampe will also be offered half and half in transparent glass bottles in the shape of an elephant.
