Emergence Early Neolithic (around 4000 to 3500 BC)

The dolmen of Mané Groh ( Breton : Mané Croc'h ) is located in the municipality of Erdeven in the Morbihan department in Brittany in France and is known for the arrangement of its four chambers. The large stone grave is a dolmen with side chambers (French: Dolmen à cabinets latéraux or Dolmen transepté , regionally also Pierres pouquelées ) and was classified as a monument historique in 1889 . In France, dolmen is the generic term for Neolithic megalithic structures of all kinds (see: French nomenclature ).

location

The large stone grave Mané Groh is located about 700 m northeast of the village of Crucuno on the left of the road in a wooded area. The structurally comparable grave complex Mané Braz is only about one kilometer away.

description

It is an atypical facility. A corridor six meters long leads into the facility, which consists of four side chambers. Without the usual head niche, the chambers lie symmetrically in pairs at both ends of the corridor. The system is not completely covered.

Such a system is unusual because probably not a large, but several small capstones were used. Perhaps the lack of a large capstone was the reason for the unusual division into four separate burial chambers. The megalithic grave Mané Groh was originally covered by a tumulus made of small stones and earth.

The excavation carried out by Z. Le Rouzic in 1920 revealed that there was originally another small, completely closed stone grave, separate from the dolmen, at the western end of the mound.

Dating

The neighboring megalithic complexes Mané Groh and Lann-Mané-Braz date from the early Neolithic (around 4000 to 3500 BC) and were possibly up to 2000 BC. In use. They are rare of their kind in Brittany, one can best compare them with systems from the south of the department of Finistère ( La Forêt-Fouesnant ).
