life and work

Mabe emigrated to Brazil with his family in 1934 to work on coffee plantations in the state of São Paulo. He also worked as a seller of hand-painted ties in São Paulo. As an autodidact, he made paintings in his spare time. In São Paulo in the late 1940s he met the painter Tomoo Handa , to whom he presented his works. He learned from the painter Yoshiya Takaoka and took part in exhibitions of the Guanabara group in 1950. In 1957 he sold his coffee plantation in Lins and moved to São Paulo to devote himself exclusively to painting. In 1959 he took part in the first Biennale of Young Artists in Paris. 53 of his paintings were on January 30, 1979 after an exhibition in Tokyo on VARIG flight 967 from Tokyo to Los Angeles. The plane disappeared over the Pacific and the paintings were lost. His works are shown in the permanent exhibitions of the São Paulo Contemporary Art Museum, the Modern Art Museum in Rio de Janeiro, the Boston Contemporary Art Museum and the Beaux-Arts Museum in Dallas.
