Manasseh Maelanga (born March 25, 1970 in Taba'akwaru Village, Malaita Province ) is a Solomon politician of the People Alliance Party who was, among other things, deputy prime minister and interior minister several times.

Life

Manasseh Maelanga served as the chief police officer after attending secondary school. He was elected for the first time in a by -election on March 27, 2008 as a member of the national parliament and has been a member of the electoral district of East Malaita since then. He was re-elected in the elections on August 4, 2010 and November 19, 2014. In the cabinet of Prime Ministers Derek Sikua he served between 2009 and 2010 as minister of provincial governments and institutional strengthening (Minister of provincial government and institutional Strengthening) . In the parliamentary elections on August 4, 2010, the Democratic Party won eleven of the 50 seats, smaller parties ten seats and non-party 28 seats. As a result, the national parliament elected Danny Philip on August 25, 2010 with 26 votes as the new Prime Minister of the Solomon Islands, while his opponent Steve Abana received 23 votes. On August 27, 2010, Peter Shanel Agovaka was sworn in as the new Minister for Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade and Manasseh Maelang as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Home Affairs . On August 30, 2010, Gordon Darcy Lilo was sworn in as Secretary of the Treasury and the rest of the Cabinet. On November 10, 2011, Treasury Secretary Gordon Darcy Lilo was sacked by Prime Minister Philip. On November 11, 2011 Prime Minister Philip resigned, after which Lilo was elected Prime Minister himself on November 16, 2011. In the election by the national parliament , Lilo was able to prevail with 29 against 20 votes for Milner Tozaka . On November 21, 2011, Lilo appointed Rick Houenipwela as the new Minister of Finance and Treasury. On November 22, 2011 Lilo presented his further cabinet, in which Peter Shanel Agovaka was confirmed as Foreign Minister and Foreign Trade Minister and Manasseh Maelanga as Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister. He held these positions until September 8, 2014.

Between December 18, 2014 and October 28, 2015, Maelanga was the leader of the non-party members of the National Parliament during the tenth legislative period. He was also a member of the Police, National Security and Correctional Services Committee , the Parliamentary House Committee, and the Foreign Relations Committee from December 22, 2014 to October 27, 2015 (Foreign Relations Committee) . On October 21, 2015, Interior Minister Douglas Ete , the Minister for National Security Commins Mewa and five other ministers resigned. Maelanga was then sworn in again on October 26, 2015, Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister in the third cabinet of Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare and together with the new Minister for National Security Stanley Sofu on October 28, 2015. As part of a reshuffle of the third Sogavare cabinet, John Maneniaru became the new Treasury Secretary on October 13, 2017. On October 28, 2017, Maelanga resigned as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior, Minister for National Security Moses Garu and several other ministers resigned.

Since leaving the government on December 6, 2017, Manasseh Maelanga has been a member of the Main Committee, a member of the Bills and Legislation Committee and a member of the Public Accounts Committee .
