Manchot (family)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Manchot is the name of a family with Lorraine roots who had to emigrate to Germany 350 years ago. Paul Mangeot (original spelling of the name, which was later intentionally or accidentally changed to Manchot ) was a wine grower in Jouy-aux-Arches , a town south of Metz . Paul and his wife Sara Cugnin were Huguenot believers. The Edict of Nantes of 1598 was originally intended to guarantee the Huguenots the practice of their religion in France. Since this was no longer possible from 1685, many of them fled to the other side of the Rhine, including the Manchot couple with their son Pierre (1681–1747) to Hesse, where he died in Frankfurt in 1747.

Historical background

Even before the Edict of Nantes was repealed, the king's attitude towards the Reformed minority was becoming increasingly intolerant, which meant that in 1680 they only made up four percent of the French population. Since Louis XIV relied on the Catholic Church to secure his power, the non-Catholics, especially the Huguenots, were initially persecuted and had to practice their faith and worship underground.

In 1685, Louis XIV repealed the Edict of Nantes. The result was persecution and then the flight of many Huguenots abroad. Half a million people of Calvinist faith left France. Many went to Holland, others to England, Ireland, Switzerland or German states (especially Hessen-Kassel and Prussia).
