Mandy Benzien

Mandy Benzien (born January 26, 1975 in Schleiz as Mandy Planert ) is a German canoeist .

Life

Mandy Benzien grew up in Gera . At the age of six she began Diving , joined two years later, but the canoe slalom .

In 1990 she was delegated to the children's and youth sports school (KJS) in Leipzig and in the same year became GDR youth champion in a single kayak . In 1992 she qualified for the first all-German junior national team and won silver with the kayak team at the junior world championships.

Her first major success in the performance class was the team victory at the 1997 World Cup in Três Coroas , Brazil , which she was able to repeat in 1999. At the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, she finished sixth. In 2002 she was runner-up in the individual competition. At the 2004 Olympic Games she took 14th place and in 2005 was again vice world champion in the individual competition. After a baby break in 2006, she reported back in 2007 with team gold and sixth place in the individual competition at the world championships in Foz do Iguaçu .

In 2008 Mandy Benzien tackled the qualification for the Olympic Games in Beijing , for which only a German women's boat could qualify for the first time. In the national qualifying races, however, she had to let world champion Jennifer Bongardt go first. In March 2009, she announced her retirement from competitive sports.

During her active time, she started for the Leipzig Canoe Club .

Private

Mandy Benzien has been married to the internationally successful slalom canoeist Jan Benzien since March 6, 2009 , who is also the father of their son Justus Jonas, who was born in 2006. In summer 2009 the couple had their second child. Professionally, Planert works as a junior trainer for the Saxon Canoe Association . She lives in Leipzig .
