Jan Benzien (born July 22, 1982 in Gießen ) is a German canoeist .

Life

Jan Benzien started canoeing slalom at the age of seven . He attended school in Giessen until he was 16. In 1999 he switched to boarding school in Leipzig because he wanted to advance his sporting career. His Abitur passed successfully in January 2002. Jan then completed his three-year military service with the Sonthofen sports promotion group until 2005 . At that time, he missed qualifying for the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens . He studied sports management at the State Study Academy in Riesa , supported by the State Sports Association of Saxony .

In preparation for the Olympic season, Jan Benzien returned to the Bundeswehr's sports promotion group in 2007. In the spring of 2008 he secured the only German Olympic starting place in the single canoe in four national qualifying races . At the Olympic Games he was one of the best after the heats, but was eliminated in twelfth place in the semifinals after losing a lot of speed after a risky maneuver in a water roller and in the end he was almost three seconds short of the final.

The year 2009 brought him two more individual medals at international championships with the bronze medals at the European Championships in Nottingham and the World Championships in La Seu d'Urgell (Spain). With two podium finishes at the World Cups in Pau (1st) and Augsburg (3rd) and third place overall in the World Cup, the season became one of the most successful of his career.

At the Canoe Slalom World Championships in 2011 he was runner-up with the team.

Since 2012 he has been competing in the single canoe (C1) as well as with Franz Anton in the two-person canoe (C2). They won the last World Cup in 2012 in Bratislava. At the 2013 European Canoe Slalom Championships in Krakow, Poland, they were able to reach 3rd place with the team.

Private

Jan Benzien has been married to the former slalom canoeist Mandy Benzien since March 6, 2009 . Their sons were born in 2006 and 2009.
