He held leading positions in mechanical and plant engineering companies and in engineering service providers. From 2011 to 2014 he was CEO of TÜV Rheinland AG in Cologne. He is a member of the supervisory board and senior advisor of several companies.

Life

After graduation in Bayreuth Manfred Bayerlein studied from 1981 to 1986 at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg materials science and computer science and a doctorate in 1991 in the field of fatigue for Dr.-Ing.

Act

The first professional positions were ABB Corporate Research in Heidelberg (development of gas turbines) and ABB Service Germany Maintenance GmbH in Dortmund. In 1999 he moved to the Messer Griesheim Group . As a member of the management of Messer Cutting & Welding GmbH in Groß-Umstadt and Nevax SA in Paris, he made a significant contribution to the restructuring and realignment of the former Messer Griesheim welding technology.

From 2003 to 2007, as spokesman for the management, he restructured TÜV SÜD Industrie Service GmbH in Munich, the largest subsidiary of TÜV SÜD . On January 1, 2008, he was appointed Chief Operating Officer to the Board of Management of TÜV SÜD AG in Munich and was responsible for global operations. In 2011 Bayerlein moved to TÜV Rheinland and took over the chairmanship of TÜV Rheinland AG in Cologne, which he held until 2014. In order not to fall behind in the global competition of testing and certification service providers, Bayerlein focused TÜV Rheinland AG on strong, profitable growth in emerging countries . In 2012, for the first time, more sales were generated abroad than in Germany. Through strategic acquisitions, TÜV Rheinland has become the world's third largest independent consulting company for data security and a global inspection and consulting company for the oil & gas and process industries .

In 2013 Bayerlein was elected chairman of the executive committee of the Association of Technical Inspection Associations ( VdTÜV ).

In 2012, TÜV Rheinland came under fire because of the scandal surrounding inferior breast implants from the French manufacturer Poly Implant Prothèse (PIP). From 1997 to 2010 - before Bayerlein joined the company - TÜV Rheinland had certified the PIP implants for the European market as a notified body for medical devices and had been deceived for years by systematic fraud. As a consequence, Bayerlein demanded changes to the test regulations with a 4-point program in order to prevent extreme criminal acts in the future.

Manfred Bayerlein is a member of the supervisory board and senior advisor.
