Manfred Berg
Manfred Berg (born December 4, 1959 in Wesel ) is a German historian .
Life
Manfred Berg studied history, political science and philosophy at the University of Heidelberg from 1980 to 1985 . There he received his doctorate in Modern History under Detlef Junker in 1988 . The habilitation took place in 1998 at the Free University of Berlin for the subject of modern history.
From 1989 to 1992 Berg initially worked at the Schurman Library for American History at the Department of History at Heidelberg University, then as a research assistant at the History Department of the John F. Kennedy Institute for North American Studies at the Free University of Berlin. From 1992 to 1997 he worked as a research assistant at the German Historical Institute in Washington , and in 1994/1995 as acting deputy director. From 2003 to 2005 Berg was director of the Center for USA Studies at the Leucorea Foundation of the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg . Since 2005 he has held the Curt Engelhorn Professorship for American History at Heidelberg University.
Since spring 2017, Berg has been the spokesperson for the Graduate School “Authority and Trust in American Culture Society, History, and Politics” (GKAT) at the Heidelberg Center for American Studies (HCA). Since 2019, Berg has been a full member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences . Berg writes for the weekly newspaper Die Zeit at irregular intervals .
